Following ostomy surgery, many people have serious and on going problems with their body image. They may feel unattractive or even ashamed of their bodies. This can have repercussions on their social life and personal relationships.

Hypnotherapy is a fantastic aid for anyone having difficulty adjusting to life with any form of ostomy. Hypnotherapy can help people come to terms with their new body image, how their body now looks and functions, and can repair dented self-esteem and confidence, also turning acceptance of an ostomy into an appreciation. For many people an ostomy is a life changing event for the better, bringing better health and a brighter future. For some people an ostomy is a life saving procedure where hypnotherapy could also be used to prepare one psychologically for surgery; this in turn would be beneficial for post operative recovery. Another well-documented benefit of hypnosis is pain control. (Visit the pain control section on this website)

How does hypnosis work? The brain has a conscious, logical thinking part that we use to make choices such as what clothes to wear or what newspaper to buy etc. It also has a subconscious part that is responsible for the way our bodies function and the way our minds work. This is the part of the mind that we target with hypnotherapy. By using relaxation techniques and carefully worded suggestions it is possible to change how we feel, both physically and psychologically about ourselves. And when we feel good about ourselves we are more confident and contented in all areas of our lives. This is particularly beneficial for 'ostimates' of all ages and backgrounds.

For people contemplating whether surgery is the right way forward for them, the subconscious mind is a useful tool and his able to help inform their decision. Using hypnotherapy I can access the subconscious mind and ask for guidance from your deeper self. The subconscious mind is responsible for all our automatic functions - those that regulate our breathing, our balance, even the blinking of our eyes. This is because the subconscious mind knows what our bodies need and when these needs should be met.

I am based in the Carlisle area which is easily accessible by road and train, and if a few people in a specific area wanted to book some sessions I may be prepared to travel. The number of sessions people need can vary but usually around three sessions can be very effective. For people further afield I am able to make CDs tailored to meet individual requirements. Usually I would conduct a 15 to 20 minute interview over the phone to gather detailed information and produce bespoke self-help hypnotic CDs.
